Adult Foster Care

Program Description

Adult foster care helps individuals who are 18 or older and can’t live on their own. These adults may have physical, emotional, developmental, or mental health needs. Many of them go to school, have jobs, or attend day programs.

As a foster care provider, your job is to give them a safe and caring home. You’ll offer help, supervision, guidance, and chances for them to do things on their own.

Foster families can ask for certain things, like the age or gender of the person they care for, or how long they’ll stay. But the most important thing is that the home is safe, supportive, and welcoming.

Requirements

  • To be licensed, you must be at least 18 years old, live in the home, and the home must be in Benton County.
  • You need to attend an orientation, which includes training about laws that protect vulnerable adults. You must also be willing to take part in training every year.
  • You and anyone else living in your home who is 13 or older must pass a background check.
  • You must have enough income to support yourself without help.
  • It’s best if you are at least one year past a major life event, like getting married or divorced, finishing treatment for drug or alcohol use, having your first child, or dealing with a major loss.
  • More rules and details will be explained during orientation and when you work with your licensing worker after you apply.
  • If you are interested in pursuing foster care licensing or have more questions, please contact Sarah Sherwood at 320-968-5111 or Email Sarah Sherwood.
