Breastfeeding and Lactation Information
Why Is Breastfeeding Important?
Breastfeeding is healthy for both the baby and the mother. Breast milk gives babies the best nutrition and changes over time to meet the baby’s needs as they grow. It also helps protect both the baby and the mother from certain health problems now and in the future.
Babies who are breastfed are less likely to have asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, ear infections, stomach bugs, serious lung infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Moms who breastfeed have a lower risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Some studies have even suggested that there could be a link between breastfeeding and a lowered risk of postpartum depression.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for approximately 6 months followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for at least 2 years and beyond as mutually desired.

Additional Resources
Lactation Tent
A lactation tent is a mobile space provided to the public that allows people to breastfeed, chestfeed, or pump in private.
Benton County Public Health offers a lactation tent that is available to check-out at no cost by our partner organizations for use at any community event! The tent can be checked-out by organizations located in Benton County or those that serve Benton County residents.
While Minnesota law (MN Statute 145.905) protects the right to breastfeed in public, we recognize that not everyone feels comfortable doing so. Providing a private option can make a meaningful difference. Offering a lactation tent at your event demonstrates your commitment to support families and promote breastfeeding. It may also help attract more families to attend! This opportunity is supported by the Minnesota Department of Health Statewide Health Improvement Partnership.
